How We Verify Greenhouse Specifications

GreenhouseMatch is built around documented product facts. We prefer current primary sources, keep uncertainty visible and separate manufacturer-published specifications from GreenhouseMatch calculations or editorial interpretation.

Core rule

If a current source does not support a specification, GreenhouseMatch should not invent it. If credible current sources conflict, the discrepancy should be shown rather than silently reconciled. A blank or “not verified” field is more useful than false precision on an expensive purchase.

1. Identify the exact product before comparing it

Greenhouse names are often reused across multiple lengths, widths, panel packages or product generations. A specification that is correct for one configuration may be wrong for another. Before recording a value, the research should identify the manufacturer, product family, exact size/configuration and, when possible, the current model generation or document revision.

Nominal labels such as “8×10” are treated as categories, not automatically as exact exterior dimensions. Actual width, length, height, door opening and interior geometry should come from the relevant current source.

2. Use a source hierarchy

  1. Manufacturer technical or engineering documentation Installation manuals, technical drawings, engineering documents and model-specific specification sheets.
  2. Current manufacturer product page Useful for current dimensions, configuration choices, included components, warranty terms and product status.
  3. Manufacturer support documentation FAQs, warranty pages, assembly guidance, accessory charts and official comparison resources.
  4. Authorized dealer technical documentation Used when the manufacturer does not publish a needed detail, with the value identified as dealer-provided rather than manufacturer-verified.
  5. University, extension and government resources Preferred for general greenhouse-design principles, plant-space planning and transparent heating/ventilation calculation methods.
  6. Other secondary sources Used cautiously for context, never to manufacture certainty where a primary specification is missing.

3. Keep published values separate from calculated values

A manufacturer-published dimension, panel thickness or vent count is a sourced product fact. A heating-load estimate, crop-capacity estimate or project-cost range is a GreenhouseMatch calculation based on assumptions. Those two categories should not be presented as if they have the same origin.

Calculators should state the major assumptions, show the units used and avoid more precision than the underlying inputs justify. If a calculation preloads data from a cataloged greenhouse model, the model data and the calculation assumptions should remain distinguishable.

4. Record configuration-dependent data explicitly

Greenhouse specifications can vary with size, glazing, anchoring, door/vent configuration, extensions or model generation. When a manufacturer publishes one value for a specific configuration, GreenhouseMatch should not automatically copy it to every greenhouse carrying the same family name.

This is particularly important for structural/weather claims, included components, panel thickness, base systems and expansion options.

5. Show uncertainty instead of hiding it

MANUFACTURER PUBLISHED

A current manufacturer source explicitly states the value or feature for the relevant model/configuration.

CONFIGURATION DEPENDENT

The value changes by greenhouse size, generation, anchoring, glazing or another configuration detail.

CONFLICTING PUBLISHED VALUES

Current sources disagree. The differing values should be identified and the buyer directed to verify the applicable current document.

NOT PUBLISHED / NOT VERIFIED

No current source located supports a confident value. The field remains unknown rather than being inferred from marketing language or a similar model.

6. Treat snow and wind claims as evidence, not universal approvals

The heavy-snow and high-wind guides show how this evidence rule affects an actual purchase decision.

A manufacturer may publish a snow-load, wind-speed or similar structural figure. That number can be valuable for comparison, but only if its context is preserved. The documentation may depend on greenhouse size, anchoring, foundation, doors/vents, glazing, installation or other assumptions.

GreenhouseMatch should identify the source and any conditions that can be reasonably extracted from it. The site should not convert a manufacturer figure into a statement that the greenhouse meets the structural or permitting requirements for a user's property. Local requirements and project-specific engineering remain outside the scope of a consumer comparison site.

7. Verify what is included, not just the headline greenhouse price

Two kits with similar retail prices may include very different equipment. A useful comparison should check, when documented, whether the base, doors, roof vents, automatic openers, shelves, anchors or other major components are included or optional. Freight and installation can also materially change the complete project cost.

Price fields should be dated because merchant pricing changes. The site's selection logic should not depend on an exact live price being available; a price tier or checked-price date is often more durable.

8. Do not infer accessory compatibility

An automatic vent opener, base, extension kit, replacement panel, shelf or other accessory should not be marked compatible because it looks similar or fits another size in the same product family. Compatibility should be supported by the manufacturer or another sufficiently specific current source.

9. Separate factual fit from subjective preference

A GreenhouseMatch finder can determine that a product fits a stated maximum footprint, has the requested glazing type or includes documented vents. It can also identify tradeoffs such as missing published weather data or a base sold separately. Those are different from subjective claims such as “best looking” or “premium quality.”

Match logic should be driven by documented criteria and user inputs. Commercial relationships must not add hidden score bonuses or suppress better-fitting non-affiliate products.

10. Keep material properties separate from whole-greenhouse performance

A glazing material can have useful general properties without proving the performance of an installed greenhouse. For example, multiwall polycarbonate can improve thermal resistance and glass can provide excellent clarity, but neither material name establishes snow load, wind resistance, ventilation capacity or local suitability.

11. Re-check important products over time

GreenhouseMatch should record source URLs and verification dates for cataloged products. High-traffic or commercially important models deserve periodic checks for discontinued generations, changed specifications, warranty revisions, new manuals and changed merchant destinations. Stable dimensional or material data may need less frequent review than price or availability.

12. Corrections are welcome

If you find a value that no longer matches current manufacturer documentation, send the affected GreenhouseMatch page, exact product/configuration and supporting source through the Contact page. A correction supported by a stronger or newer source should be treated as an improvement to the dataset, not as a challenge to defend an old number.

Commercial links do not change the evidence standard.

A merchant relationship can affect where a purchase link goes. It does not determine the reported specifications, the identified tradeoffs, the source hierarchy or the underlying selection logic.
