What the calculator is really sizing

The headline dimensions on a greenhouse listing describe the overall footprint, not the amount of plant space you can actually use. Oklahoma State University Extension recommends determining greenhouse width from the planned benches and walks. It notes that side benches should stay within comfortable one-sided reach, while center benches can be wider because they are worked from both sides. It also distinguishes narrow service walks from wider aisles intended for easier passage.

UGA Cooperative Extension gives a useful planning benchmark: in a conventional hobby-greenhouse layout, roughly two-thirds of the floor may be bench space and one-third walkways and aisles. That is not a universal law, but it is a much more realistic starting point than assuming that an 80-square-foot greenhouse provides 80 square feet of plant capacity.

Crop-count defaults: useful for planning, not a planting prescription

The crop inputs intentionally use broad, conservative planning allowances. Extension recommendations vary by cultivar and production system. Utah State, for example, gives tomato spacing in the range of about 18–24 inches between plants with wider row spacing, while UGA gives peppers a broad 12–24-inch in-row range with roughly 3-foot rows. Cucumber spacing also changes substantially depending on whether vines are trellised and how rows are arranged.

Why nominal greenhouse sizes need a second check

Two products sold in the same nominal size class may not occupy the same prepared base. Current manufacturer examples make the point clearly: a Canopia Glory sold as an 8×12 is published at about 8'4" by 11'11", while the Janssens Junior Victorian 24 is about 7'9" by 12'7". Those differences matter when a greenhouse must fit beside a fence, on an existing pad or within a setback.

The size result therefore answers “what size class should I compare?” rather than “what exact foundation should I build?” Use the appropriate size guide below, then check the exact model drawing.

How does the greenhouse size calculator work?

It estimates the growing area required for the selected crops or uses a growing-area value you enter, then adds access and workspace allowances before rounding up to practical standard greenhouse sizes.

Why does the recommended greenhouse have more floor area than my plants alone need?

A greenhouse needs working space as well as plant space. Aisles, door access, benches or beds, potting space and circulation reduce the share of the footprint that can be used directly for plants.

Are the crop space allowances exact?

No. They are conservative planning defaults, not production-density rules. Cultivar, pruning, trellising, container size, bed design and growing system can change spacing substantially. If you already know the growing area you need, enter that value instead.

Should I buy a greenhouse whose nominal size exactly matches the result?

No. Treat nominal size as a shopping category. Verify the exact exterior footprint, base dimensions, door clearance, sidewall height and other model-specific dimensions before preparing a site or ordering a kit.
